धर्म एव हतो हन्ति धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः।
तस्माद्धर्मो न हन्तव्यो मा नो धर्मो हतोऽवधीत्।।
It has
been said in Manusmriti – The man who destroys Dharma, he is destroyed by
Dharma and the one who protects Dharma, his Dharma also protects him. That's
why we should never violate the religion, that is, sacrifice it because of the
fear that the killed religion should never kill us.
Now the question that arises before us is 'What is religion?' because in present times politics has made religion a Yaksha question, whoever tries to answer it, loses himself. But this does not mean that there is no answer to this question. Religion is not a creed or sect, but an art of living life. Many books like Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads etc. while explaining religion say that that which is worth wearing is religion. Now the question is what to wear? So the ten characteristics of human religion have been mentioned-
धृतिः
क्षमा दमोऽस्तेयं
शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः।
धीर्विद्या सत्यमक्रोधो, दषकं धर्मलक्षणम्।।
patience, kshama, dama (controlling one's passions), asteya (non-stealing), saucha (internal and external cleanliness), indriya nigraha (controlling the senses), dhi (use of intelligence), vidya (greater knowledge Pipasa), Satya (adherence to the truth in mind, word and deed) and Akrodha (non-anger).
